Book One: The Age of Conquest.

A city under siege. A crew under orders. No room for a mistake.

Tenochtitlan, 1521. Spanish brigantines are closing the lake. The causeways are contested. Every canoe carrying food or wounded men must pass through waterways that may already belong to the enemy.

Cuauhtli knows the lake. Commanding men is harder. Each crossing forces him to decide who gets aboard, what must be left behind, and how much danger his crew can bear. A wrong order can cost more than the boat.

Across the water, Spanish crossbowman Diego de Ledesma fights for his comrades, his king, and the reward he believes he has earned. Within the city, Cuauhtli's wife Xochitl struggles to feed their children as the siege consumes the household's last reserves. Beyond the defending lines, Yaotl seeks refuge for his kin through allies whose help comes with conditions.

As the fighting closes around them, keeping faith with one person may mean failing another. Men can hold a crossing with courage and steel. Getting the wounded home demands something more.
